Appearance:
A fascinating fish that can change colour from Gray(dark) to a golden colour apparently at will. It can also have a patchwork appearance which is observed in the above photos. Parancistrus are usually very broad with wide gill openings.

Compatibility:
Even though quite large, the Parancistrus aurantiacus is relatively peaceful

Sexing and Breeding:
Males have a broader head plus more bristles than females on the pectoral fin spines and behind the gill covers. Sexually mature males have longer bristles on the lower end of the body(between tail and dorsal fin)

Diet:
this fish is an omnivore, meaning it feeds on both meaty foods and plant matter.
As far as the meaty foods go, once acclimatized this fish readily accepts foods like meaty pellets, insect larvae (blood worms, mosquito larvae), tubifex, krill and fresh shrimp. The herbivore part of this fish likes food items such as algae wafers, algae, fresh and (preboiled) vegetables.

Water parameters:
25-29c PH 5.5-7.5
No special demands but do have a very high oxygen requirement as they come from fast moving rivers.

Max Size:
25cms
