I am currently breeding albino short fins successfully however wish to improve my setup to minimize space and losses.

At this stage i am utilising a 3 ft tank barebottom containing 3 pieces of driftwood 3 caves, a large anubias plant, 2 large sponge filters, aqua nova 800ltr/hr canister, aquaone 1000 canister filtr (currently off). Fish consist of 1 male shortfin, 1 male longfin, 4 female short fins.
not sure of tank dimensions as cant measure with broken wrist.

Currently putting my fry in an Aquaone AR850 barebottom running the standard filter and a brandless 1000lt/hr canister filter, 2 large sponge filters, large piece of drift wood, anubias. contains about 50 fry and an adult female peppermint bristlenose. Lost about 20 fry think i took them out of breeding tank too soon.

Would it be feasible to leave the fry in the breeding 3ft tank or am i better off continuing to place in separate tank after 4 weeks. Would like some advice/tips to improve my setup.

If you have 1M shortfin and 1M longfin, I would seperate the fry to another tank, as you otherwise do not know what you have later to sell off. Cheers jk

My longfin refuses to breed i think cause the caves are too big and the smallest one is claimed by my shortfin so i dont have to deal with that atm :)

but eventually you do.
Why not move the longfin into the other tank. Then you just have the others in there and then you can also leave the fry in there. cheers jk

hi there

I also breed bn's and have both lf's and shorts - i have done what jk is suggesting. I leave my fry in my 350ltr with 1m and 1f abn and have my lf female and 1m in a 60ltr.
I find that i only lose about 10% of my fry because being a larger tank and very mature tank the conditions are stable and perfect, with lots of places for them to graze and hide.
Its also a good idea because if you deside to get another lf you could make a pair and breed them happily in the other tank.
The only problem i have is when selling bath of fry i have to near dismantle (i say i when it is actually the wifes job) the whole tank and this requires effort.

hope this helps]good luck and respect

I have lost my aquaone filter after breaking it now, and in process of saving up for more driftwood.

would an 800 ltr filter be insufficient now for what i have bearing in mind i have lost a female also. ?

800 should be ok for short period of time. Make sure with a bare bottom tank you keep up the water changes and and also scape the bottom so you get no film build up. cheers jk

some do it every 2-3 days and other 1 a week. Hope you get other replies as well on this, as I stopped having bare bottom tanks for 3years now and have just a small layer of sand. cheers jk
