Alder cones should they ????

Hi All :hi:

A question if I may :) should alder cones start to grow shoots??? I only ask as I recently got some and after about a week or so they are growing shoots??

It sounds like your cones still had seeds in, probably not dried for long enough, and now they have sprouted.

Were the cones opened or closed when you got them ?

Hi and thanks for the replies :) I will try take a picture of some when I can. Another question is how long do you keep them in before replacing or do you just add more?

i keep them in till they start to fall apart, then syphon them out at the next water change. The other option would be to place them in the filter with a sock. cheers jk :thumbup:

I don't think it matters, I've got some Green Alder Alnus cordata cones that I've collected recently, and they are also growing seedlings in the tanks. I've had it happen before with Common Alder, but this doesn't seem to happen if you collect the cones later in the year, so I assume it is because the scales are still closed, and the seed hasn't fallen out yet.

You could try drying the cones for a couple of days, my suspicion is that the all the seeds will then drop out, and the cones will be obviously open.
