just upgraded to a 30g tank. Have 3 female fish in it which i moved from the smaller tank. 1 platy had aprox 10 or more months
1 rainbow fish had in there aprox 6 or 7 weeks
1 cherry barb, a rescue from nephew who was po'd about something and wanted out of the hobby, i dont recall seeing a male as they are bright red and I should have noticed , but i did take one female about 1
month ago as he planned to cruely chuck this girl.
thats about all the backround i got for clues. dying to know what they are.

just noticed 2 baby fish, pretty tiny, could be more . So any guesses who could be the mama? I pretty much ruled out the platy, had her so long, but how long can a female wait before release? not sure if they came from eggs , but the platy is the only livebearer...so very confused.

anybody figure this out? was hoping to find out as they will prob end up someones snack. tried to catch them for fry saver but cant get um atm.
thanks, Georgie

Some female livebearers can store sperm for severel months, its known as superfoetation, so the Platy should be your mother.

I've never had a livebearer wait months before dropping fry. Yes they can have several batches after being with a male and never seeing another again but not heard of them waiting to drop :dk:

Be interesting to see what they grow up to be should they survive in there

Platies will often eat their own fry and she has probably had more births over the period that have been eaten.

thanks eveyone,
still a few in there and i am planning to scape this 30g tank to ready for my L34 on hold at store till i pick him up this coming weekend. He may get a taste for tiny fishies ,so when i do the rescape, i guess i will try to catch them for the fry saver, just to see for sure, but betting Steve and Jimmy are correct that they are platy.

right, steve and jimmy were correct , platy babies, the fan tails and dorsal fins are appearing . The darn barb is eating them, so she is in q-tank now, want to see the colors i get before she has a buffet with them. Fish babies are so cute, just want to protect them, even though i didnt plan on them.
thanks again. Georgie
