I have had this guy for about a year in my office. I originally got him out of a feeder vat at my lfs to cycle the tank but quickly fell in love with him:whistle:. recently he has lost 75% of his black color and turned a really shiny brassy gold color. I still think he looks good but I'm worried something is causing this color change. Water is pretty good, nitrates get a little high sometimes between water changes 50%/week-10 days. but everything else checks out. He is in a 30g tank with an Atman 800lph canister and a sponge filter with a 600lph powerhead. gets indirect sunlight about 11 hours a day sometimes i turn the tank lights on in the evening when i'm there or have meetings etc...
So what could be causing this color change? is it something natural for them to change?

All gold fish are mutated Carp and nature will always force things back your fish is just reverting to a small degree

Thanks, I've only ever kept comets and orandas before so first experience with a black type goldfish. Not that I like him any less with the gold colorings as he is a very lively and interactive fish.

Feeding this fish can present an issue they cant see very well so they can become rather stroppy at feeding time best to have two areas were you feed this reduces the compertition.
