Hi,

I have some Rosy Tetra that are showing activity for spawning.
I'm thinking of putting them in another tank to see if they will.
I understand that i would have to condition the females first. I have 2 male and 6 female.
Do i put alt the females in the other tank or just 1? How would i condition them?
What foods and how often?

Thanks

J

Hi all,
Lots of live food and keep the males and females separate, you need very soft, clean, warm water to spawn them in and a dimly lit tank (I'd go for fairly heavily tannin stained). I've never tried Rosy Tetra but I would assume they are spawn eaters, so you need lots of spawning mops or fine leaved plants and to remove the fish after they have spawned or have some form of breeding trap. You don't want a very small breeding tank, something about 18" x 12" x 8".

Feeding the fry is tricky because they are really small, I use the "Java moss method", in this you have a big lump of Java moss in the bottom of the tank, and after you've removed the parents you lower the water level to 6", so the moss is almost reaching the surface and hope the fry can pick enough rotifers etc of it until they are big enough to eat micro-worms.

If nothing happens, some Pencils and Lemon Tetra spawn at first light, so I try to have the tank so it is briefly lit in the morning, if you can arrange natural light that is best.

Have a look at this article, it covers most of the points you need to know:
