I have 3 common BN's growing well, eat Courgette regularly but suddenly they have been eating the skin on the Courgette this week. They have never eaten this before, is this normal? should they been eating the skin??

Cheers

Yes it's perfectly normal. Different plecs have different preferences and their tastes can change. And as you mention they are "growing well," it could be that their teeth are developing, enabling them to eat firmer things.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

i have 2 L128 blue phantoms and the skin is the only thing they eat when I feed them zucchini (same thing), my bn eats it all ,and is not as fussy, but all love green bell pepper(they leave the skin),red bell pepper ,same, peas, etc.

the skin is fine for them ...do you have wood in the tank too so they can rasp on that ? hth

sorry sdleigh, wasn't laughing at your question....was laughing cuz zucchini skin was the only thing my L128's would eat when i got them ....took me a while and some ''no food days'' to get them to eat other veggies.

as for zucchini , it's still only the skin they will eat :dk:

Cheers for your replies, just seemed strange that for 4 month that iv had them, they have never touched the skin and suddenly some morning when I take it out, there is nothing but a thin strip of skin left which they can't get to!

Hi zeebo, yeah I have a large slab of wood in there, its not bogwood though, would bogwood be better or just the chunck I have be ok?

I think the rule of thumb is wood that can be scraped with your finger- nail when wood is wet. The plecs should be able to rasp on it..you will see wide gooves ,and brown poo. note..there is prob some wood that should not be used ,pine would prob be one bad type and none treated ,but look around for a list of good and bad or ask more knowledgable members. I buy my wood in an aquatic store so i know it's safe. hth.

Mine love the skin, it must be the amount of greenery they need, I have an adult male L397 that eats the skin regularly, but only at times and other times not..the rest off my plecs eat the skin also, usually tho they quickly devour the pulp first.

A simple explanation could be that some veg is sprayed with a glaze to make it look nice this will not be to the liking of some plecos.

tis a good point,i always wash the veg under the tap before i use it.
Belive me the stuff the supermarkets use cant be washed off it is all to do with the proses of using gas to preserve soft veg and fruit.
