Feeding L183 fry.

Hi guys,

Bit of a problem with my L183 fry ...... I just can't seem to get them to put on weight. This is the first pair of bristlenoses I've kept, so I'm convinced I'm doing something wrong. I'm feeding bbs, tetra prima, spirulina and astax mix, courgette, sweet potato, peas and green beans. They just don't seem to like the veggies much, and I'm worried about the protein content in their diet.

I know there are breeders on here who seem to have few problems with L183 fry, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks
Elaine

Hey Elaine.

You are feeding more than I did. I just fed my usuall crushed up mix of dried foods and a slice of courgette. Not really sure why they aint putting on weight as you have got plenty of variety for them.:dk: I would stick to what your doing IMO. Is this their first spawn?

Cheers

Hi Geeman, and thanks for the reply.

Yes, this is their first spawn. Only had them a couple of months and it came as quite a surprise. Dad kicked the eggs out after only 2 days and I lost most of them. I have several youngsters at just over 2 wks now, but just don't seem to have the feeding right yet.

Possibly a weaker group of fry being their first time ?

have they got some wood to chew on???? and you can just feed them flake food and a bit of zucchinni and they should be fine....

were they exposed to a possible ammonia / nitrite spike at all???

Hi, my L183 fry seem to enjoy algae wafers and a slice of cucumber best but eat virtually anything else I put in ie prima, flake, spirulina flake and catfish pellets, most of the time they are all over the bogwood and seem to be chewing on it so make sure you have some bogwood in there.

Thanks everyone for all the replies ...... great help !

Their tank is a mature, very stable tank with few problems with water quality, so I don't think it's been an ammonia/nitrite spike. I do a daily 'poop scoop' and water change so it's usually good quality water. I have lots of bogwood in the main tank, but nothing in the fry saver so that could be a problem. I'll stick a few small pieces in beside them today and see if that helps. Must admit I never thought about the bogwood in the saver, but going on what everyone's said, it makes a difference ....... thanks you ! I do use a blackwater extract on their tank and the water is amber coloured, and full of tannins. I did notice a big difference in them when I started using it.

They are still hanging on in there, no deaths as yet. Fingers crossed the bogwood helps.

Thanks again.

Thanks Irene.

They seem lively enough tonight, but I don't think they've been told they're supposed to like veggies LOL ! Still not touching them.

I'll let you know how they get on.

Hi Ricky, and thanks ..... I'm well chuffed !

Yes, they are the pair I got from you. First spawn, and a bit of a disaster ( dad kicked the eggs out day 2 ). I have a few surviving fry and still trying to get the feeding right. The little ones I have seem active enough, and quite healthy, but don't show any interest in veggies at all. Was concerned they weren't getting a proper balanced diet as they didn't seem to be putting on the weight the way my Hypan fry do.

I'll let you know how they get on.

Hi Guys,

So sorry it's taken me as long to update ..... not enough hours in the day atm.

Good news though, the fry are doing great. Suddenly decided they like courgette and are all over it. After a long time of removing the courgette untouched, they seemed to realise it was actually food and not something to just hide behind LOL !

Thanks everyone for all the help as I did panic a little being my first pair of bristlenoses. Really was just a case of making sure the water was good and sticking with it ....... thank you !

Elaine
