My Dad was getting rid of his tanks and one of them was a little tiddler that had a little charm about it. It's only 27 litres or 6 UK gallons gross with dimensions of 45 x 25 x 27cm or 18" x 10" x 11", the front corners are cut off making it technically hexagonal. I'll filter with either an air driven sponge filter or little internal power filter. My water from the tap is soft.

But having kept plecs for most of my time, I'm really dense when it comes to other fish, so I'd welcome some your suggestions. I was thinking a heavily planted jungle'esque tank with a pair of little Gouramis.

Chocolate gouramis are a favorite of mine.
Or a planted nano shrimp tank.
A pair of apistos or other dwarf cichilds.
Dwarf barbs/rasboras.

I personally would have a blackwater tank with loads of wood, leaves and tannin stained water with some floating plants and a pair of lovely Apistogramma

Great suggestions, some lovely beautiful fish there. I think I would prefer to have a pair of larger (about 5cm/2") fishes rather than a group of smaller ones. So a pair gouramis and apistogramma are my forerunners. Can anyone suggest a good apisto that suitable? I still fancy it heavily planted though.

Would there be room for a group of little Corys or alike?

Macmasteri and Viejeta are two that I really like and the fire red agassizi are also a stunner...For corys something like Corydoras Harbrosis/Histatus.

yeah i would only have a pair of Apistos, if you have not had them before there are loads that are suitable, Cacatuoides, aggaszii, borelli, macmasteri, panduro.
If you were to spawn them the cories would only get a hard time. They are wonderful fish and i would bet money that once you start you wont stop with Apistogramma.

Hi all,
I think the tank is a bit small for Apistos, the only usually available species I would recommend would be A. borelli, and you would really need an already paired pair.

How about any of Threadfin Rainbow (Iriatherina werneri) (pair or harem), a surrogate dwarf cichlid - Dwarf Badis (Dario dario or D. hysginon) pair or Dwarf Sparkling Gourami (Trichopsis pumila), the Gouramis are small enough that you could grow out 5 or 6 to get a pair, and all 3 options are interesting fish.

The smaller Betta species would also be an option (Betta imbellis, B. picta) if you could find them.

cheers Darrel

Oh god, so sorry. For some reason i thought it was a 47 litre tank, not a 27. Yes, im with Darrel then on it being too small for a pair of Apistos.

No problem, I wasn't quite sold on Apistos anyway

I have this brilliant book, "Labyrinth Fish by Helmut Pinter," and as silly as it sounds I want some just so I can read more of it. Trichopsis pumila looks very good and also being very small (3.5cm). Do you think a group of 4 would be ok?

Anyone know whether these are obtainable?

wow, just googled that, a stunner of a fish and nice fins. I would say 4 should be fine, as long as your usual maintenance is adhered to. Cant help with if they are in UK. cheers jk

They are very available...I have them in stock most of the year round, so you should be able to get them at your LFS.
