Hi,

I am looking at getting a fluval 205 to replace my rio 180 internal filter.

The tank is elavated off the floor by 14cm (5,5 inch), The water level is at 56 cm (22 inch) from the floor.

The filter top would be @ 38 cm (15 inch), so the height difference from the top of the filter to the water level is 18 cm (7 inch).

Would this work?

I've downloaded and read the manual and it does mention that it needs to be under the aquarium, but not by how much.

I found a similair thread by search, asking the same about an eheim 2224. The anwser here was, that it would work fine.

I suppose the eheim and fluval are the same principle?

I'm not sure, as this would be my first external.

Hope you guys can help.

Hello Jforce

If your deciding what external filter to buy. Get the Eheim. You will never look back. Worth every penny.

In your first question.. As long as the filter is below the tank it will work fine. If thats what you were asking??

Can get a really good deal on the fluval, i know eheim is better. But the fuval will do and is an great improvement over the juwel filter.

The filter is not below the tank, its kinda next to it. Only slighty lower (14 cm).

But the low height difference won't affect performance?

(Cause when i manual change water using a hose the water flow's faster if u hold the hose closer to the floor.)

Made a little paint sketch, to clear things up:

I've had a filter next to a tank as well and I'm pretty sure that even if the filter is higher than the water level it shouldn't be a problem if you filled it with water completely before .

go with an Eheim. I would always want the whole filter under the water tank level. I think you would get a better preformance. cheers jk
