I just bought a fluval 405. According to directions the outflow tube will be a few inches under the surface of the water. Is this going to create enough oxygen for my fish to be fine? Will the fluval, when installed per directions, work fine "by itself"? :dk:

I had a 304 and 404 and always had the outlet above or at the water line. They were both second hand so I didnt have the instructions but they worked fine like it.

I would just cut the tube a bit smaller so that it agitates the water's surface. You can buy spraybars for the fluvals.

i have 404s and a 405 but again all secondhand, but all work fine for me and one of the 404s is definitely not set up as per directions as its sat on a crate
If the 405 has the same output nozzle as the old ones when attaching it to the inside of the tank with the sucker you can always angle it upwards slightly to disturb the water surface but like Matt i prefer waterline, i have a spraybar on one which works great and another i have just fed more of the outlet pipe into the tank and attached it to the inside with suckers horizontally at water level without any nozzle at all which gives a really good return flow.
Hope that helps :hi:

Thanks for the information everyone. I didn't realize that you could get a spray bar for the fluvals until today. I've been looking at them online, and they are cheap too! Also from all the information I've been gathering, I do believe I'll add an hob filter to this tank also. Thanks again for your thoughts!
