I have a small tank that has just finshed cycling with a fluval plus 1, shortly it will be housing acouple of BNs, but iv been reading instructions for this filter and is says to remove the filter and and the new one every 3 to 6 months... as its a single filter in it, all the bacteria well be jist removed. So it says suppliment with stuff to return the bacteria; but do you tjink it would be better to cut both the new and old medium in half and change only half every 1 to 2 months... to me this seems tje better idea. What do you think, cheers guys

Def cut in half...I would never replace a complete sponge, its just asking for trouble...I don't think you need to replace that often unless you are finding the sponges blocking up too quickly...I have run tanks with the same sponges for over 3 years...If the sponge is not falling apart, its all good.

I have sponges in fluval 1, 2 and 3s still going strong after 5 years  just squeeze out in tank water during maintenance when they slow down. If ripped and very tatty then replace with new but like said cut in half.

Fluval 1 for a couple of bns sound a bit light filtration to me :dk:

I agree on that, but it should be ok for a while with good tank maintenance especially if they are still small fish...My general rule of thumb I work by is get a filter that is capable of doing a tank twice the volume of the aquarium you plan to use.

Oh no, i have an air filter too, i like both. One for additional oxygen and one for current, both filtering, the tank is also going to be used in keeping a couple of Apisto. Hopefully to breed but water is alittle hard in my area. Sounds good to me to cut half of the filter tho, i might run thrm for longer then. Cheers for advise guys
