Glass aquarium life span?

After my mum's disaster of a blown seal on her aquarium recently, I wondered what the average lifespan for a glass aquarium is? I Googled this, and came up with various figures, but I wondered how long you guys have had your tanks? I'll have had my oldest tank for five years in July, so I'd like to think I have a while before I need to start worrying about this.

Also, is there anything you can do maintenance-wise to increase the life span of the tank?

On average silicon has a 10 year lifespan...I have tanks that are 20 years old and still hold water, some give up long before that...I would always look to reseal at the 10 year mark as A rule of thumb if it was in my house.

The joints are subject to stress and stress will ultimately result is failure.

I agree with Derek 10 years is around the right time span.
As said I have tanks older than my son (35) still holding.

Bring back the slate bottom steel frame tank I say, Loved that leaking putty and the way a bit of sand would seal the leak and the rust on the frame wonderful.
