Hi,

I'm Paul, from west Manchester. I'm a professional mechanical engineer in my late 30s and working in railway research.

I've been wanting tropical fish for over 20 years but had always found an excuse why not. I was persuaded to try it by a fishy friend in September last year and I am completely hooked. I already have 3 tanks which were all fishless cycled and I have a strong South American theme in the stocking. I have lovely soft neutral tapwater here (pH=6.8, KH=0.6, GH=1).
I'm planning to get a fourth larger tank soon.

The current tanks are as follows:

T1 165L Planted community tank:
13 H. Bleheri Rummies
6 Trilineatus cory
Bolivian ram 'Tiwanaku'
L128 Blue Phantom 'Orinoco'

T2 40L QT/Hospital/breeding tank:
6 Cory Melini

T3 120L Rio Negro blackwater biotope:
L244 Yellow Seam 'Yanomami'
5 P. Georgiae Rummies
10 Marble Hatchetfish
6 Dicrossus filamentosus

As you can see, I have a couple of L-number plecos. These are undoubtedly my favourite fish. They are both still young and very active, not shy at all. I've had them both for about 2 months.

I have a book about the L-numbers which says that L244 are very difficult to keep. Fortunately my little 'Yanomami' hasn't read the book and seems very happy so far. But I want to make sure he/she has the best possible chance.

So I've joined the forum to find out a bit more about keeping these beautiful fish, to help me choose my stocking for my next tank, and to learn more about sexing and breeding plecos.

Thanks :)

I have lots of rocky hiding places in both tanks. Feeding is fresh veg (courgette, peas, red pepper), pleco pellets, and whatever the other fish are eating (cory/cichlid pellets, bloodworm etc). By far the biggest volume they eat is in fresh veg.

My water parameters are typically:
Tanks 1&2: pH 6.8, KH 1, GH 2, NO3 <40, T27C
Tank 3: pH 6.4, KH 0.4, GH 1, NO3 <5, T27C
Obviously NH3, NO2 both zero.

I've posted some pictures in the gallery, hopefully I can link them here too:

Just a quick snap on the phone, so sorry about the quality, but I love my little 'Yanomami'. Give him 48 hours and my hungry little pleco will have eaten all this lump of courgette :)

Now, where can I find him a lady friend?

Thank you! I love my L128 'Orinoco' as well. Here are a few more pics of him (/her?)

He's named after the Womble; Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble who always avoided his cleaning duties and preferred to hide in the burrow and sleep. Seemed appropriate for a pleco, especially one from the Rio Orinoco :)

(Wombles might mean nothing to people outside the UK, they were a children's TV series many years ago)
