Hi

I have posted on here a little while ago when I was initially setting up my 60 litre tank and at that point I decided against getting a plec. I am now in the process of setting up a 180 litre tank :) And definatly want to get a plec now. I am considering a bristlenose plec as i've seen film of them digging around in the sand and they seem to have a good character but are they all like this??. Now I really know nothing about plecs and don't want to do the wrong thing by them. Which one would people recommend for my tank, i'm going to try to have quite a heavily planted back to it and am thinking half sand and half gravel substrate.

Would people recommend that I have more than one is it possible to have a breeding pair or does this casue problems with the rest of the fish? I have heard that their quite messy so is one the way to go???

So many questions, I do hope someone has time to point me in the right direction.

Thanks

:welcome: and hope you enjoy this site.
We will try to help you. What other fish do you have in the tank and also what filtration do you have ? Sand is a much finer substrate for BN to sift through. In such a size tank you can easily keep a pair. Depending on how much food you give them, depends on the outcome out the back. Generally they are not that messy . They like driftwood and a cave or 2 tucked away somewhere. For food, they like tablets and every now and then some zuchinni or other vegetable to nibble on. They are a cool fish full of character. enjoy cheers jk

If you are after a pleco and are new to keeping them then a bristlenose is def the way to go. In a tank that size you could easily have a pair. My rule of thumb is 1 male per 1.5 square feet of tank floor and up to 2 females per male. But in a community tank I would only go for two, maybe three.

They are very lovable fish with character. they are also fairly easy to breed if you feel like giving that a shot. they can make a fair bit of poo but thats not such an issue. most people have a couple of bristlenose in their community tanks and don;t get overwhelmed. My grow-out tank on the other hand, well thats a daily cleaning job but there is over 100 bristlenose in there

I have a breeding pair in a 120L community tank and they don't bother any other fish except maybe other bottom feeders. My poor, blind bronze cory accidentally gets in the way of my male bristlenose sometimes and gets a bit of a fright when he reacts. lol
But other than that, you should be fine.

If your after some Bn's im more than happy to point you in the right direction of my TANK:clap:
I have some 2" standard browns ready for new homes.would rather another member have some than the lfs.

Bn's are a fun active plec to start with and always seen out and about.
