i would put him in a quarantine tank and use the two cures as stated. You might not see a lot of what goea on in the tank, as they are night active, then all the action happens. Even though this fish would have been in another cave maybe, sometimes the dominant male when he swims at night might challange him. Also he might have challanged the dominant male as was stuck in a corner etc and then the damage occurred. Some males will not give in to releasingthe cave and thus the challanger just munches on the tail which as you know is the part that hangs out as the head is in. I would however watch the dominant male for further bahaviour and would add more caves and hidding facilities for the hospitalised one in future. cheers jk

Thankyou bb. I've done as told and am monitoring him. All the colour is not gone on the sides, and the tail is only half gone. That said the breathing has gone down and it doesn't look infected. I'm tempted to sell on a male and have a trio, better for the fish that way too

by all means it is nirmally easier to have a trio instead of too many males, however such is the ganble when you buy small ls, just like we all do then dwindle them out. Some other members also think maybe 2 males are better, as it keep the dominant male more alert. As you already know, these cute fish also have a mean streak so to speak, but that is also what they do in nature, survival of the fittest so to speak. Good luck with the male and i am sure he will recover. cheers jk

Ah you may have had the male steal the cave and the eggs. I had that happen once. I removed the chewed male and allowed the healthy one to continue fanning the eggs.
My choice is Waterlifes Myxazin if I think its bad enough to medicate.
