hello,
i have found this forum while looking for a treatment for my hypostomus pleco. he is 2 and half years and 24cms. For a about a week i noticed a spot in the belly. Around the large spot some points, white and pink/red. He is now alone is a quarantine small tank. In the store i usually buy fish they advised sera baktopur in tablets and he is now in the second tretament and i beleive it is spreading, i think it is much larger then 5 days ago when i started treating. I m also keeping the aquarium light off. I can´t find the composition of the medicine in internet and from what i looked here in the forum it seems like the planaque plague? THey sugest coper sulfate, i think this medicine doesn t have copper sulfate. Also he is not eating. If you can please help. Diana

Hard to see clearly but I would guess baterial infection. Another option is a heater burn but usually a burn is whitish/pink. Sera baktopur appears to be the right sort of medication. How long have you been treating for? Did you remove any carbon from the filters.

Panaque plague only affects Panaques (which yours is not, appears to be L001 to me) so I don't think its that.

thank you for the reply. in fact we turned the second heater on a few days ago (it is a 240lt tank and it has not been a cold winter untill a week ago) and he does usually stand near the second heater... so that is a possibility. i saw the spot tuesday, bought the sera baktopur wednesday and applied wednesday night, 5 days ago, and today made a 1/3 water change and added sera baktopur again 12hours later. In the quarantine tank i have a simple filter, no carbon now. What about adding a small amount of salt? i will try another picture tomorrow but in the quarantine tank it is hard to find him in a position that we can see better.

Looks bacterial to me. Salt may help but I'd look into an antibiotic if you can get it. As I am not familiar with the medications available in your area you'd have to go talk to someone local.

Hi &

Firstly you need to identify what it is before deciding on a treatment..
If it is a burn, Your pleco might benefit from Melafix & Pimafix Combined (as per directions), wc daily before addition of new daily meds..If it continues to get worse or gets a secondary infection, like gets a fuzzy appearance, you might need Sterazin or similar, or if it's a virus, treatment would be an antibiotic. I don't know what treatments you can get so, that's about all I can add..Best of luck .
