so the loach forum someone asked the co if dangerous...co says safe, too far away from reactors (400 miles) factories make the wafers. So how far is far enough ? :dk:

So the factory is 400 miles away from the nearest nuclear reactor?
The thing is if that is a concern then where the ingredients themselves come from could also be something to worry about.

:-/ Glo in the dark plecos :woohoo: Seriously tho, I don't know how that would effect the foods...We are probably OK for a while as most of the stock sold just now would have been manufactured before the accident...Its something we may have to consider in the future months to come.

lol i see what you mean, didnt understand at first. Well it is 400 miles aqay but even people 200 miles away arent in much danger, andd those that are close by are only in danger after fairly long periods of time, the ingredients for the algae wafers and so on are proberly only in japan for a very short period of time so even then if they were within that danger zone of 120 miles around the reactors it would only be a serious concern if the wafers took a couple of months to manufactur.

Though glow in the dark plecs would be quite cool

The radioactive iodine has a half life of a day or two so in a couple of weeks it will disapate to a realy low level. The cesium that has been released has a half life of 30 years which is the one to worry about. It will build up in the food chain as leafy greens ie grass cabbage and aquatic plants will take it up animals feed on it and get a higher dose as it goes up the food chain and consentrations will get higher.

Even though Chenobal is still restricted area people still live in areas and grow veg eat fish and hunt !!

I know testing is going on in Japan of all food stuffs even milk as cow as we all know eat grass and the milk could be contaminated. Even some parts of our Lake District sheep are still tested 20 odd years later after Chenobal as Cesium contaminated the grass there.

On the good side Hikari is part of Kyorin Pharmaceuticals and thery are helping alot with the disaster and because they are working with a potentional product that could contain radioactive subsances they will be screened at both sides leaving and ariving countrys.

The Hakari factory that is near to the reactors makes the Koi products, Algae wafers are made at the Kansai Factory which is at the other end of the north island and miles awayabout 500 miles. All factorys are equipped with back up facilities to fill in for each other should any trouble occur.

Hope this helps.

Sound like a geek i know.
