So I bought a 5" Common Pleco and this is my only Pleco. So basically I don’t know if he’s eating or not. At about 7 or 8PM I turn the lights out and have tried several foods. First is Hikari Wafers, I don’t think he ever eats these and I think it’s more of a game to see which Cichlid can break it up. I’ve tried unblanched Squash, I tried blanched squash which when I woke up one morning and came in he sucked on it for about 2 seconds then went to the glass. I’ve tried honeydew melon and Cantaloupe all with a ScrewCumber but in the morning they all look the same. I’ve also bought but have not tried a yellow squash and a yam. So is there a way to tell if he’s eating and for the yam should I blanch it or not? Thanks in advance!!

Try regular white potato. Here we have old havest and new harvest in the stores. I stay away from old harvest. I don't like the way they look or taste. They sink with no weight added to it. Its like candy to them. I'm pretty sure it will give it a try.

I personally do not blanch any of the veggies I feed my guys. I find it just breaks up too easily that way. My plecs don't like soft veggies unless it's green peas.

Since yours is a common it can be fed other pellet type foods that are not algae wafers. IME right now the food my non veggie eating plecos freak over is the NLS mega fish tabs. I think they're 10mm. This food is great.

IME with foods hikari wafers are not touched by mine they just don't eat it. I also find they make the fish look bloated. My guys won't even swim near the NLS H20 wafers.

A veggie wafer that is loved by mine is HBH veggie wafers. I really like the results I've had with this food. Good growth and really healthy looking fish.

I have the same problem with the sinking pellets/wafers lol I still feed them anyways. How long do you leave the food in there for them? When I first started feeding raw veggies they wouldn't touch them at first, but after some bio-film had grown on it and they came over to suck that off I think they got a little taste of what was underneath and were hooked! Now moments after I add half a cucumber ill have at least 3 sucking on it like lightning. Might just not know what what the veggies are yet, could be thinking "Why does he keep changing tank ornaments on me?" Good luck!

If they aren't eating they will get a sunken in belly more and more the longer they don't eat and then sunken in eyes followed by death.

If they don't have these symptoms they are likely eating.

Well looking at the belly I guess it’s kind of hard to tell because some parts look flat or a little bulged and others don’t. On another note, the pleco excretes ALOT. I’m guessing if he is going the bathroom then he must be eating something right?

Color can be an indication of what its eating, though not always exactly. However if you were to feed yam/sweet potatoe then see orange poo, then its pretty clear thats what its eating. So long as its not transparent then things are looking good.
