Hi all

Just a quick question.

What is the max amount of BN plecos i can keep in my 70 L fish tanks ?

I have 3 females and 1 male ATM and would really love to get 1 or 2 more pepermint plecos

Thanks
Michael

I'd say 4-5 total plecos max, and best if there is only 1 male. 2 males will fight for dominance in a smaller tank like that and stress all the inhabitants making them more susceptible to illness. It's much better to be safe than sorry. Just my 2 cents.

Hello Michael,

Now you did not state the size of these. For smaller 3-4cm you could add more, however please be wary that when then get to teenager/adult years there will be struggles and fights occuring.

I am not at all in favour of a 70liter tank, because a lot of people buy fish small and then do not get larger tanks when the fish mature and then have problems with injury and illness due space stress.

So what size BN do you have and what size Peps do you wish to get ?

cheers jk

ok sounds good. Might even sell 1 of the adults. Its a female from the first batch.

would there be problems if it started laying eggs for its dad. ?

You always have a chance of getting deformities when you have inbreeding and may also find the quality of the genes would be poor in some of them :)

There are different theories on that. Many breeders intentionally breed offspring back to parents when trying to stabilize a particular gene expression. In general this typically leads to a large number of culls because of the many deformities but also can produce other individuals with even stronger expressions of those particular traits (color, finnage, etc..)

So really it's up to you and what your goal is in breeding the fish.

ohh cool to know. atm i have a black common male and 2 LF albeno's. i never planed for them to start breeding until 1 day i noticed the eggs. i was sooo happy. But i would really like to try the albeno LF with a pepermint to see if i can get a longfin pep. That would be lovely. if wondering if the females will breed with both ?? or just the 1 male
