Just thinking out loud

Im in the very initial mental planning stages of a new tank and just wanted to run a couple of ideas by you all. Obviously these ideas are based on dealing with Panaque waste (duh!).

The first being an upside down weir. Instead of the intake being at the top of the weir and water filling one chamber and then exiting the tank. The weir would consist of 2 panels. The water would enter from the bottom, flow upwards over another weir and then down to exit the tank via a bulkhead.

And then a raised floor (to work in cooperation with the upside down weir). On top of the glass floor, a raised grate (perhaps egg crate). Then a pump placed so that debris falling through the grate would be directed towards the upside down weir. My idea was to have roughly half the tank like this with relatively large pebbles and slates on top of the grate to try and simulate a river bed.

Obviously in my head these both work perfectly but then again I have no aquarium DIY experience at all, so I might be missing some very basic principles here.

I'll try to do some pictures to illustrate these ideas if you cant visualise them. So what do you think? Plausible? Please entertain me with comments and criticisms.

I am pretty sure macvsog23 uses a simillar set up so its probably possible. I would tell you more but I tend to switch off when he starts telling me about his latest filteration set up:) I am sure he will find this thread and go into great detail for you:)

I have just got round my panaque poo machine problem by giving it to Scatz:woohoo:

Cheers

I have built the 200 gallon with 2 weirs one on top and one on the bottom, with the aid of a powerhead and bare bottom, I never have to clean the bottom.

I think I know what you are planning a weir within a weir like an overflow box with the intake below the false floor level? I think the weir will work fine its the same principle as an external overflow box, not sure on the egg crate false floor though will the royals be ok on it? great concept Matt

I am struggling to work it out re water flow etc. sketch would be good.
shenzhenluohan - do you have a photo?
Ask and U shall receive..

The above pic shows how the left side feeds from the bottom and the right side feeds from the top (note the bottom fed side sits 1/4" lower to cause a good vacuum)

U can see some poo coming up between the glass panels. I use an 8000lph pump and the suction is so great that smaller fish get sucked up with ease:wb:
