So why are they so cool?

1) Well the spots are pretty attractive and the older they get, the more spots they seem to develop.

2) They are a true carnivore rather than a wood eater so you aren't going to be constantly cleaning wood shavings out of your canister.

3) That sexy vampire mouth! Omg its zany.

Funny little sensitive filaments on the front of the mouth find the little shrimp and other crustations in amonst the rocks.

The back of the mouth looks like a big hoover trap to gather food.

If they suction down its very strong.

Once they have something in their mouth there are teeth for stabbing and eating the prey.

They have retractable fangs just like a vampire and yup they can draw blood.

Vampire plecos, the cool catfish with bite!

As far as I know they sell for about $100 per cm. Its pretty rare to see many of them sold.

Edit* before I give overseas ppl a heart attack. Thats Australian price. Probably cheaper overseas. :D

They are quite a rough raspy sort of fish with lots of odontodes even on the adipose fin.
Usually their fighting is just a bit of tail slapping which can leave scratches or a grab at a fin which splits them and either it heals completely or it just stays split and heals that way.
Biting seems to be more a male thing and can do a bit of damage but so far none of its been life threatening.

Because they are such a rough skinned fish, nets will tangle them very easily. Be quick when moving them in a net and allow them to disentangle themselves in a shallow dish. They retract all the rough bits once they settle down and free themselves. If not, you might have to carefully snip the net if its caught on that adipose with spurs.

Odontodes on the adipose fin.

Bad damage from two males fighting but most of the time its only a few scratches or a fin split.

Its a shame I couldn't get anyone to really display in this lot of photos. One did the full tail extending and by the time I grabbed the camera he had folded it back up again. :wb:
The tail span is amazing and with the dorsal up as well its just breathtaking. Here is an in tank one when it was younger.

An older photo

Forget about vent sexing on these. Its the size of a pinhead!

I have one and wouldn't describe them as cool but the one I have is funny. Sitting watching it tonight spinning around doing rolls on the bottom with a malaysian trumpet snail. Not sure what it is doing if maybe it thinks it can get the snail inside. A very outgoing plec and gets on great with all the other plecs. Lives right next to the L114 with no issues, best buddies at the moment, not sure how long for though.
