L046 - Zebra ID Query :)

To people who have zebras,
Im curious as to whether the males will make the grunt sound, like some other Plecos, by using their Odontodes ?

cant say i've ever heard zebs grunting.... i'll have to listen out for them in future

I dont really want to try and **** them off, to find out either..
But: If its a helpful identifier, I might.
Mine are starting to defend areas, got a couple of good - obvious males which I like..

Interesting. Never heard them. How audible would the grunt be if they did ?

I have heard my L46s (and other plecos) made noises whenever I man-handled them. However, the mechanism of making the noise is not restricted to sex. Typically, fish make noise by stridulation or the drumming of the swim bladder with the sonic muscle. Both of which are not sex specific features.

ok, sounds interesting, thanks for the input.
Like you said, they do it when they're angry that you're holding them mostly.
But to me, it always looked like it was to do with the odontodes.
Can see them flaring in and out as the sound is made.
