buying at smaller size gives you much better chance of getting females... as fry hit 4cm and bigger you can pick out potential females.. NOT 100% successful and accurate but it certainly puts the odds in your favour if your keeping girls.. also i have found that more fry are female when spawned in softer water... having grown out 2 spawns of fry to test the theory... it definitely runs true with ancistrus and i had a feeling it would be the same with the zebs as they are basically all loricariidae catfish...
