Hi everyone,

I'm a bit concerned, I have had my 3 zebs for a month now and was advised by previous keeper to feed them courgette and prawns. They do not touch the courgette and hardly eat the prawn, I have seen them eat some of the algae on the back wall of the tank but am concerned they should be eating more than what they are. Could anyone let me know of anything else I could offer them also? I was thinking perhaps bloodworm?

Thanks

Mine won't touch courgette either. They need a more varied diet. Mine get crushed tetra prima, doromin, with some spirulina flake in plus frozen bloodworms (only adults not young that can choke) lobster eggs, brine shrimp with garlic etc

Should all be available, some of the frozen may not be as common but have a look around, just lots of variation is good :D

They need more variety that prawn and courgette. Mine eat some things and nibble at others but they get it anyway to give them a bit of variety. They wont touch veggies but at least once a week they get spirulina sticks with paprika and garlic which all my fish love and so do they. Their favourites are tetra prima, earthworm sticks, jmc catfish pelletts. Not so keen on brineshrimp pellets and hikari sinking wafers and hate bloodworm pelletts. Once a week they get frozen mini bloodworm which they absolutely love.

how big are they before you start feeding them the blood worm? Mine is growing pretty slow. I bought them last year at 2.5-3cm probably they are at 4cm now. are they growing that slow? because i saw another bloke selling his 5-6cm zebs at the age of 12months...

Fish growth is a big debate
You can force fry on buy feeding selective high protein foods but this has its disadvantages.

Hypans the group that Zebs belong to are strange from a growth point some grow fast I have L316 fry just under a year old that are the same size as the Parents
I have L201 fry that are 3 years old and still less than 2"
Zebs are about the slowest I have seen.

growth

i believe a fish will only eat what it wants to... with hypans if you over feed they simply leave it on the bottom of the tank if they are not hungry...

the biggest factor in fish growth is water changes in my opinion...
change the water regularly and feed well (varied diet) and they grow quickly...

i have 10 x 007 fry growing up and one has reached 5cm and the rest 3.5cm and 3cm and a couple 2.5cm.... varied growth is quite big among 10 fish...

i have bred and grown up some 333's and they are 7-9cm in 15mths and are showing signs of breeding...

but i also have some 201's which i think are by far the slowest growers...
get the same foods and water changing routines as the other hypans but its taken 3 years to reach 7-8cm...

What are their size should be for me to start feed them with bloodworm?
i usually wait for them to reach 3cm... and maybe 3.5cm for zebs (only to be safe as they are such a nice fish and pricey!!!)

but i have been feeding bloodworms in the 260 tank with 2.5cm fry in it and havent had any deaths yet!!! touch wood....
