Hi,

Saw these in a lfs today. They were advertised as Hypancistrus Inspector (L201)

They are about 2 1/2 - 3 inces

I've read that the Inspector is a L102

Just wondering (i know the quality of the pics aren't the best) if they are L201s and how would i sex them as the poeple in the lfs didn't know.

Thanks

J

you are correct it is a possible error from the LFS. 201 is not the Hypan Inspector, but the L102 is.

The L201 is one of the most popular plecs’ available today and rightly so. They are a good choice for the beginner and are often confused with L102 (Hypancistrus inspector).

The L102 - has a black seam on the dorsal fin - has larger eyes - has small spots on the head and large ones on the body - grows nearly twice as large as L201.

Yours look like the L201. cheers jk

i will be honest, at that size it is difficult. my way is to look at the fish from top. look for a different head shape. go for a fish with a V and one with a U shape head. Females also tend to be slightly wider. females also tend to be smaller. cheers jk

Is it the Females that are U shaped?
I have a Male but he's always in a cave so don't see him much. Would like a mate for him.

Thanks very much. I shall go and educate the lfs.
This'll be the second time i've had to show a lfs how to sex a fish.
I thought lfss' should have an idea as to what's what before selling.
I'd def look into each fish before selling

Thanks
