You could put it in a small fish tank with shallow water, hang it over the edge of a tank or table, get the pleco to sit in the overhang part and point a camera up to snap piccies of its vent. On the computer then you can enlarge the photos and see if its bits are long and pointy or if it looks wider and blunt for a girl.
