Name: Pseudacanthicus cf. spinosus

Common Names: Anapu Cactus

Location: Upper regions Anapu River, Para, Brasil

Photos:

Appearance: darkish brown with dark brown spots

Compatibility: A relatively peaceful species, however needs enough room to stake out a territory, which will however be defended fiercely if intruded by other fish. Already at an early age, can be quite aggressive towards it's own kind or similar looking plecos, especially if cramped for space and competing with other bottom dwellers

Sexing and Breeding: Males are slimmer and have more odontodel growth on all fins, rays and pectorals. Females are more rounded

Diet: This is a carnivorous plec. One glance at its mouth illustrates this well. Instead of the true sucker mouth, it has a mouth that is more suitable for grasping and holding food items. All this means that its diet should primarily be made up of meaty foods, such as shrimp, krill, mussels, blood worms, mosquito larvae and fish meats ( fillets). However once acclimatized would also accept pellet food and sometimes even fresh vegetables such as zuchinni, potatoe ,cucumber, etc

Water parameters: Temp 25-29C PH 5.5 -7.5 , dimmed lights and a good amount of hiding places. This fish requires a lot of personal space due to its aggressive territorial behaviour. Additional oxygen is prefered and a current through the tank. Due to high protein diet a good filtration system is needed

Max Size: over 40cm ( 15.75 " )

Bred by: We presume not achieved by a PP member so far, as we have not received any reports. At this stage no known reports from overseas breeding success

Additional Comments: A very rare fish, in Europe they have set up a club to keep this species alive as exports are prohibited. Some info used from www.welsfans.de and photo used with permission from Ingo Seidel back to Nature
