Leaky Tetratec again - should I get an Eheim?

Sorry for the length of this post! Anyway, I have a number of tanks running, most of which are Juwels of various sizes, all running the manufacturers internal, a Huey Hung sponge filter and a Tetratec EX, mostly 700s, though the Rio 300 has the EX1200 model running.

The EX1200 was purchased in August 2007, and the rest were bought between Jan 2008 and Sept 2009. I have had numerous problems with leaks from the motorheads, and normally replacing the hose adaptor unit has normally fixed this. However, one of them started leaking the other night and ended up spewing water everywhere. I spent literally hours trying to fix it - new seal, new hose adaptor etc (I have a spares box), but nothing I did worked. Soaking wet and thoroughly hacked off, I ended up ripping the whole thing out in disgust. :wb: The bioload on that tank is very light and to be honest, the internal is more than enough - the fish, thankfully, are all fine and I don't plan to replace that particular external.

I've lost confidence in these filters now and I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of them, as most of my tanks are so lightly stocked it seems pointless - they were more for backup anyway in case the internal ever stopped running for any reason. However, the Rio 300 and Rio 180 are more heavily stocked (plecs), so I feel they need external filters. I can't decide whether to stick with the Tetratecs and pray they don't start leaking when I'm not in the house, or whether to rip them out and replace them with something else, such as an Eheim.

I have no experience of Eheims. I know they are expensive, but I'm prepared to spend the money rather than risk causing problems for my fish and wrecking my carpets! Can anyone offer me some advice? Cheers. B.

Is it the 1200 thats leaking?. I have same problem with mine although the leak has stopped. Mrwickedweasel had the same problem and contacted tetra tec who replaced the part if i remember rightly.
I also use a fluval cannister which is around 6 years old now and never had a problem with it. Eheim make good quality filters so they are another option if you prefer to replace.

A new tap connector unit ( Hose Adapter with o-rings) will or should solve the issue, the problem is the seals go on them and they leak into the head then down the outside of the canister its a common problem with them, when I used to use them I always had a spare in the house mine went on a 1200 twice in the time I had it.

Here is a link to the part it is part D http://www.tetra.de/tetra/go/D342E820219BFB922FE4DE78F5655775/?lang_id=2&bestellnr=145559

If you bring it in to me I will replace the unit for you...I know its a worry about these filters and I have had many hours discussion with tetra over this problem, nearly delisted them many times but didn't due to them being a great filter when they work...Over the last 6-8 months I have not had any returns on this filter, so they do seem to have turned the corner with them...That said Eheim is a more reliable filter, but I have had quite a few returns with then too...So nothing is perfect!

Should you stay with the Tetratec your gonads will rot and your life will be a living hell
Should you find the joy and excitment of Eheim all will be well your Gonads will grow and life will be fantastic

Hi Derek,

I tried replacing both the motor head seal and the hose adaptor unit (I had new ones in the cupboard), but nothing worked. I took it apart and reseated everything several times, but after running for about ten minutes it would start leaking again. I've replaced the hose adaptors on both the EX1200 and one of the other EX700s that was leaking and (touch wood), they've been fine ever since. I'm not going to bother trying to fix this particular one, as the tank it was running on is really lightly stocked and honestly doesn't need it. However, the one on the Rio 180 now seems to be developing a slow leak as well. I have yet another hose adaptor in the cupboard, so will see if I can fix it today. If not, you might see me at some point this weekend!

It's a shame, as I find the the Tetratecs excellent filters otherwise. As you said, nothing is perfect - I've heard of Eheims leaking too.

My 1200 normally leaks after cleaning it so i always have it in a bucket now, it does only seem to do it for a short while then stops. These issues have put me off Tetra externals now and have converted to Eheim. Fluval for me are just too flimsy and dont like the build quality. There are a few other contenders on the go but cannot comment as i have never used them, rena, aquaone and superfish to name a few.

be aware of some of the cheaper manufacturers as the power consumption is huge on some of them.

Well, I've replaced the hose adaptor on the EX700 with the slow leak - thankfully, nothing so far and it's been 3 hours now, so fingers crossed it's fixed. Looks there was something more seriously wrong with the other one - it was just over three years old (so out of warranty) and had behaved itself up until then, so maybe it was just one of those things. Off to order some more stock for my spares cupboard now though!

Thanks for all your replies. I'm going to wait and hope I don't have any more issues, but if I do, I will probably get an Eheim and give that a try instead.

As I said, if you bring the filter into me I will get it replaced for you.

Hi,

I have 3 EX1200's and have had problems with leaks from the hose adapter units but have found out how to 'fiw' it if anyone's interested I can definitely vouch that it works.

It sounds obvios but first you need to establish exactly where the unit is leaking from, IME there are two definite flaws with the unit. The hose end connectors can leak and are best replaced if they do but the more common problem is the hose adapter unit itself. If this leaks it appears that the main canister body is leaking because there is a drain off channel which exits just under the filters handles.

The repair is easy. There are four screws under the adapter unit so undo those and dismantle it taking into account how it goes back together. On the two angled pieces which the hose end connectors screw onto are two ridges. Get some PVA tape and wind it around and around into this groove until its proud by a few mm thus creating a seal when its reassembled.

Try to keep moving the hose connectors to a minimum to protect that seal once in use. Mine have all had this modification for well over two years now with no further trouble.

Chris.

The problem filter was the 700. I'm wondering if it was wear and tear, as according to my log book (I'm sad, I keep log books for all my tanks!), that particular filter had been running since it was installed in Jan 2008 with no issues. Replacing the seal didn't work either, as I tried that after replacing the hose adaptor unit.

Thankfully, the other 700 with the slow leak has been fine since Saturday morning, so it looks like that was just the hose adaptor. The EX1200 ran for just over a year before it started leaking. I changed the hose adaptor unit back in Jan 2009, so it has been running for over two years now with no further issues.
