does anyone in the UK know of an affordable unit e.g. strip between 600mm and 1200mm long that provides a reasonable level of white and/or mixed coloured light suitable for growing low light plants e.g. java fern etc.?

No expert on plants but have a look in ebay. Might have something in there explains the best ones when you scroll down to look at the light specs.

If you don't mind it looking a bit DIY you can use any light fitting that takes MR16 (12 Volt) LED lamps. If you can guarantee it won't get wet GU10 is also an option.
I recently bought some LED floodlights from here: <http://stores.ebay.co.uk/TopLighting4u/10W-/_i.html?_fsub=3342246017&_sid=1053609927&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322> it looks pretty ugly, but 3 of them should do.
