im in the process of creating my fish room and would like to know everyones opinon on natral light there is a window i can insulate it and board it up or i can inside and out with glass or perspex to allow light but reduce heat/loss

just wanted to know if because i wanted to control lighting and i kinda thought it is important to do so not only for cat but for other fish but a friend of mine said it would be stupied to stop natural light

so now i need your opinon

well i have some in the light and some that dont get any all breed just not sure if it would be better if i control the amout of light they get as is having the abilaty to creat cycles?

well iv been thinking about this strongly
and for some reason i keep turning to natural light i guess its the fact that i can cover it later if i choose plus i save on electricaty?
with that it makes it a no brainer ?

joby is your fish kept in complet darkness? how long have you had them plus do you control there breeding or they breed when ever ?
like WC help but have you looked into times of light?
cause i know with 1 of my cichlids they tend to breed when i turn the light on at about 2 am on the same day i done a WC and they are on natrul light cycle ?

I have a light in the fishroom and thats all I use. There are a couple of lights on the tanks but they are only put on for maintenance.

I just let them get on with breeding to be honest. They all get at least 10% water change 6 times a week with room temperature water and a variety of food. So far I've not tried to stimulate a dry/rainy season :dk:

I leave a nightlight on all night so they are not in complete darkness and its not too much of a shock when I put the main light on in the morning

I have no experience of a fish room, but I think I would leave a small amount of natural light if you have the choice, so you have a bit of day light if there is a power cut.

Hi all,
I'd definitely go for some natural light as well, it's free amongst other things.
If you have adequate ventilation and double glazing it shouldn't effect the temperature at all.

If I had the chance I'd also go for a large internal water tank, this has the advantage of providing water at room temperature and also acts as a "thermal mass", controlling the extremes of temperature.

Well as for ventilation I'm adding a whirlybird with a adjustable vent as for double glazing I have decided to place sheet of 20 mm of perspex on inside and out of window

what do people do for ventilation when converting a garage say into a fishroom?
do you put a vent which can open and close, so cna make sure fish dont sufficate and mould does not grow on walls??
in the winter I shut my skylight window in my study where i have two tanks, and that has central heating and a door to lounge which is usually open. but now i have mould up the wall by the tanks!

just so you are aware mold is toxic !

your best bet in mold provetion is adding a mold stop into the paint you paint

you should remove the mold that is there now make sure your tanks have lids prohaps a hood till you decide to paint again ?

Mine is an integral garage so like a room in itself. I never get any damp or condensation. I have no other ventilation in there but its perfectly ok to work in there, just like any other room in my house :)
