I have a 125 gallon/475 litre tank in a room that has vaulted ceilings and a lot of natural light although the tank is in a corner that is mostly shaded so the lighting is mostly indirect. I am wondering how long can I leave the aquarium lights on to not offset the plecos nocturnal schedule?

I would like to observe them a little past sunset but I have been usually turning off the lights at sunset to allow them to have a natural light cycle.

 i keep my blue moon light on for a few hours at night so I can see them. I don't keep it on all night though.

Hi all,
I wouldn't worry about the natural light at all, it really isn't a problem. In N. Europe we live a long way north (New York is on the same latitude as Madrid or Barcelona) and it is light for 16hours or more in the summer, but the fish don't mind. Just set your time period for when you want to watch the fish, when the light goes out and the tank is dark the plecs will become active what-ever time of the day or night it is. If you have plants you need at least 8 hours of light, but if you don't have plants you can just have the light on for the time when you want to watch the tank.

cheers Darrel
