hey guys
need some advice on bn's currently have 10 commons 10 peppermints and 4 longfin albino.

7 of common are on standard 2 foot tank and a trio and the rest of the bn's on 4 foot with 2 bala sharks and one large angel fish so question is do all bn's need approx 2 years to start spawing? as my trio seem to be pretty decent size male is about 8cm 2 females are 7cm and i have caves everywhere but gonna make terrocota pot caves tomorow and try those and also how long would peppermints take till they spawn thier about 2-3 cm atm.

thanks

Sizar :)

Have to agree, commons can start breeding when they reach 5-6cms and Peppermints need longer to mature.

Have you tried to trigger a spawn with cool water changes or try the trio in a seperate tank, the male is probably spending most of his time keeping unwanted attension away from his cave,.

Hi, they will breed as soon as they are old enough -if they are not too busy fighting.
some males will not tolerate other males and the tanks sound quite crowded.

The other thing that you may want to consider is how many you have in the tank. 7 mature bristlenose in a 2 ft tank is not a great idea. It can be made to work with lots of hiding places but you find the males and ever sometimes the female will begin to argue and fight. I would think you would have to get everything almost spot on perfect before they would breed under those conditions.

The trio in the other tank is your best bet but again, there are a few other fish in there that will give them a hard time. If their breeding cave is too exposed they wont breed as they will feel threatened by the other fish. I would make sure the entrance to the cave is well hidden.

I use a single large water change to trigger my spawns. I generally do a cool 40% water change after leaving the tank for a bit longer between cleans. if you do weekly cleans, leave it for two, then do the big WC and cross your fingers :)
