Common Name: Snowball / White Pearl Shrimp

Species Name: Neocaridina cf. zhangjiajiensis var. white

The Snowball Shrimp is not a commonly available species of shrimp in the UK it can be found for sale in specialist Shrimp stores such as mine Rare Aquatics, difficult to sourse in the UK without importing them.

Aquarium- I use a 50L aquarium is big enough to house my breeding colony of Snowball Shrimp.
I have found the best filtration for Shrimp tanks to be sponge filters the shrimp feed off micro organisms on the filters they also pose no threat to tiny shrimplets

Diet - They are omnivores their natural diet would be mainly algae, plant matter, dead insects, fish and so on in the aquarium they will scavenge fish flake food, algae or any other specialist food your care to feed them I have found them to be undemanding in there dietary requirements although a calcium supplement is recommended it is advised not to feed too much protein as it can cause early stage sheading resulting in death.

Breeding / Sexing - Snowball Shrimp should not be kept with other Neocaridina species of Shrimp such as Cherry Shrimp to avoid hybrids.

Females are larger and more vividly white than the males, which are smaller and less striking.

Like Cherry Shrimp, Snowball Shrimp will breed with ease in a freshwater aquarium.

Females when preparing to berry (drop eggs) have very distinct bright white saddles which are infact the pure white eggs inside the body which look like miniature bright white snowballs

The eggs hatch as miniature versions of the adults tiny tiny shrimplets.
They are best kept in a dense planted tanks, with plenty of moss and hiding places.
If bred in the community tank this is especially important due to the small size of the shrimplets making them prone to predation.

Requirements - As with all Shrimp Snowball shrimp require a mature aquarium with good quality water.

Regular water changes not only maintain water quality they help shrimplet development having a direct effect in the speed that they grow, I have noticed that after a heavy water change shrimplets tend to shead, hence taking another stage in growth.
