New Tank for Possibly Stunted Pleco

I believe I have a L021 Pterygoplichthys pardalis. It's about 5-6 years old and only about 6-7 inches long though he's hard to measure through the glass. When we first setup the aquarium and bought him we thought we'd researched him well enough in that the info we found was that they were like pigs and would only grow to fit the tank so we never worried that he wasn't huge. We're moving now and were looking at replacing the tank with as small a tank as possible as it's only him and a single ghost shrimp in the tank now. This is when I discovered that we've likely stunted him.

They're in a 45 gallon hexagonal tank. I haven't tested the water recently, but historically the ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and pH values have all been within normal ranges. He has a cave, two fairly large pieces of driftwood and the bottom of the tank is covered in plants. He also gets algae wafers and some flake food.

He doesn't look funny to me as in he doesn't appear misshapen and he moves around the tank. My concern is that some threads I've read on stunting say they're in pain. My question is: if we put him in a bigger tank (and how big exactly?) will he grow anymore at this age? Also, being this size is he in pain and if so, what can I do if anything?

More likely P. disjuctivus due to the vermiculated belly. At this point it may grow a bit more as they can be long-lived. There really is no way to tell if its in pain but then again there really isn't anything you can do either.

My only question is what is "normal range"?

I used 1 of those test kits and the numbers were always in the lowest possible brackets which the test kit said was good. I.e. low ammonia low nitrites and I think it was no nitrates. The pH I believe was slightly basic like 7.4.

i had a stunted gourami with a curved spine and he was the leader of the pack with 8 other gourmis following him around. My opinon is if he was in pain he surly owuld have been laking behind due to pain of movement and certainly wouldnt have been dishing out punishment for dont knowing there place!

hope this gives you some peace of mind

What size tank should I be considering getting since he's not likely to grow to full size? Should a 50 gallon be good enough for him by himself? or maybe with a small school of neons? And what would be the minimum if he were to grow to full size?

About 14"+. Common recommendation is 4l x 2l x 2l, whwre l is adult size of fish. Best tank would be like a 150 gallon.
