My daughter's beloved Al has a strange stringy thing hanging out of him. It varies in color. He still has a good appetite and is very healthy looking. I am very new to fish and need some help. I've tried to look up on different sites to determine what this is so any help would be great. I tried to post a pic but wasn't able to.

What type of fish is "Al"?
What region of the fish does the stringy thing hang out of?
What color(s) is it? Does it vary day to day or is it a variety of colors?

Sounds like poo, especially if it is from the anal region. Assuming Al is a plec, plec poo can vary depending upon what it eats. One color that can indicate a problem is clearish/translucent white which typically indicate internal parasites.

Al is a pleco. Sorry I didn't give much info. After much searching on the web and a visit to the local pet store, I have determined that it was indeed poo.

long live the poo . Yup sometimes it sure can get long. Be wary however if it is white or seethrough it indicates a problem. cheers jk
