Keep it simple! keep the water right and the fish will look after themselves...All we have to do is feed them. and get the compatibility mix right....I can't get this down to 1 piece of advice.

 good question . ....know what you are buying ,read up, and make sure your tank and you can handle caring for it.....and never get advice from chain/lfs ...NEVER!- if they offer advice , ignore it .

Hi all,
Mine has always been:
Buy and read Diana Walstad's book - "Ecology of the Planted Aquarium".
Which is really the same as
Understand the nitrogen cycle!
which goes with
Research research research.
and
Keep it simple! keep the water right and the fish will look after themselves
and
you are not a fish keeper, but a person who controls the quality of the water
These days the most important one is probably
join a good forum
although you probably need to have done your research and understood the nitrogen cycle before you can decide what makes a forum good.

Another one would have been
learn to read German
although "Google translate" can now do a lot of the work for you.

Cheers Darrel
