Yet another PH question for you all:)

So some of you may have read my thread about my rock background not working out because it turns out some of the the rock where making my oH spike. So I did a big wc and took the background out and refilled with ammonia for the fishless cycle. Checked ph and it was about 6.4...normal ph for my tap water.
The next morning I checked it again and it was back p to 7.6!
That afternoon I did another big wc and took all my big rocks out, just incase, and refilled again.
Next morning, same thing ph back up.:wb:

I retested my substrate (pool filter silica sand) and no problems there. I'm retesting the big rocks too. So far no ph spike...

So what gives.:dk:all I have in my tank is the sand, water, a few plants, and 2 airstones. Could it be the air stones?? any ideas?

I know 7.6 isn't that high but the Ls I plan to keep like the ph around 6-6.5...

help please:hi:

Do you have other tanks ? What is the ph?
Ph of tap water changes over time depending on when you take the readings. Tap water can gain or lose co2 which will affect ph. Try to leave a glass of water out overnight & see what ph you get.

Hi all,
Tap water can gain or lose co2 which will affect ph.
I agree with Lorne, this is most probably to do with the CO2 from the tap water out-gassing. The tap supply will be both colder than the tank water and under pressure, meaning that it can hold more CO2, as the CO2 is out-gassed the pH will rise. If you have air stones this will happen more quickly and if you have a planted tank plants will also take up some CO2.

cheers Darrel

Hi there. Thanks for all the replys. My laptop is out for repairs so I'm just getting back to you all now. I have, however, been able to read your replys on my phone so I took your advice:)

I left a glass of water out overnight and the ph wen from 6.4 to 7.4! I guess you were right. The ph in my tank is still 7.6, so still higher than I'd like. I added another big peice of driftwood and I have some nice indian almond leaves on the way:thumbup:
Any ideas on how I can lower the ph and keep it stable when I do water changes in the future?

I'll post a pic of my tank when I get my laptop back:whistle:
