Hello all.I had this male ancistrus albino for some time in a 300 liter barebottom discus aquarium. The discus has been moved to a bigger tank and this fellow was alone in the 300L for like 1 week when a red spot appeared in his head which got bigger.I was wondering if you could give me some advice on what is this and how i can deal with it.Thanks.

Does it look to be under the skin?

It could be a bacterial infection. Do you scrub the bottom of the tank?

Yes it seems to be under the skin. The tank is super clean,50% wc per day with vacuum the bottom cleaning glasses etc.I was growing discus in this tank and i moved them some days ago.Did a big wc and left only the pleco.Whatever you see in the photo is 2 tablets i just fed him. This appeared just 2 days ago as pink and today is what you see in the photo.

My initial thought was maybe the plec had picked up an infection from the bio film that builds up on the glass in particular the bottom, there have been suggestions that it can cause problems with very young fry in tanks with bare bottoms. It could be that the plec was stressed about the tank mates going plus a large water change which has lowered his resistance to an ailment. Maybe someone else has a suggestion?

Is there any decor in the tank?
Can you get hold of any bacterial meds?

Looks like a L144 rather than an albino bristlenose

Unfortunately the little fellow just died.I think you were right about being a bacterial infection but even so it was fast.As i said the tank was getting daily maintenance with water changes and vacuming bottom and every 2-3 days cleaning glasses and bottom. This routine was followed for months till a week ago that got empty except from the pleco which i was about to move in a new 200liter planted tank.I dont believe there was much of a film in the glasses and even if there was within this week seems a bit thin to killed the fish so fast.Propably the fish was stressed for some time and its propably my fault cause the tank had zero decoration.Anyway nothing we can do now thanks for the response Doodles.

initially I thought of bruising. Has it spread or is it getting bigger ? It could be bacterial as the red is coming from the nostrils of the fish. cheers jk

Sorry you lost him but I was thinking with zero decor and the postion of the injury on the high part of the head is it possible you bumped the heater down close to the bottom of the tank and he sat under it to hide and cooked his brains?

very sorry for your loss.RIP litte guy.

I do agree with the idea of him using the heater as cover, and getting burned , especially if he had no place to hide, they will go to whatever is available , and unfortunally , if nothing else is in the tank( caves, wood , rocks, etc ) the heater would be the only place to hide. just a thought for future prevention.
