Pros and cons of centralised systems

Thinking of setting up a centralised system for breeding a few different species of Loricariid. Larger water volume and more filtration, but are there any drawbacks to breeding in this sort of system?
Cheers

i think if you use one sump or filter for mutiple tanks there are a few issues to consider
1. for disease you have issues as then all tanks would/could be affected
2. some species might require different water flows and currents
3. some like different temps for breeding
4. water changes would mean some tanks get more fresh water than others.
5. You yourself do no control each tank
just a thought.

What I recommend, but don't use do to only having 11 tanks, is to drill them in the lower back and use an adjustable riser tube to the sump or drain. You can tilt the riser down to drain the tank or lower the water volume or tilt it up and out of the water to isolate individual tanks. I'd still use a sponge filter to provide a nice surface for micro-organisms to colonize for the fry.

....

Jk thanks for the detailed reply.
1. Not really worried about disease, there's a separate tank for quaranting new fish and if you're doing everything right you should never see disease with fish you've had for a while. I'm going to build failsafes such as taps to isolate tanks and run an oversized UV sterilizer.
2 & 3. I would have to go for species that will live and breed in similar temps and current is as simple as adding an extra powerhead to a tank on the system. I think most species, especially captive bred, will be able to breed under similar conditions. The captive bred L-numbers in Australia seem fairly hardy and adaptable these days.
4. On a centralised system the new water would be mixed into all tanks within minutes.
5. I do control the whole system though...not quite sure I understand this one, sorry:)
dbosman, thanks for your reply. I'll build taps into the pipework to isolate tanks when needed, probably also an overflow system so I can do a 50% waterchange on the whole system when needed and top up with heated and aged water. This should eliminate the need for adjustable risers...I hope lol. All tanks will have additional filtration, sponge or power.

Anyone think L-numbers will be affected by the hormones of different species in the water when breeding?
