hi, this is the 4th time i see rainbow fish eggs in the crook of some wood. In past someone eats them, but parents are defending them diligently . I was thinking of trying to rescue the eggs and have read up on it..says use a mop. Not sure what that is. I have a plastic fry box that floats in the tank, but the eggs are too small and will fall through the slits on box bottom. Can i use a sponge , cut it thin and lay it on the bottom of the fry box? How do i retrieve the eggs.. can i use a turkey baster ? or will they get stuck inside? the article said they have adhesive.
Should i add an air stone.
Is this all for naught and they wont survive anyway ?
Just thought i would give them a chance ....
any advice appreciated.
other fish in 54g tank are 2L128's, farlowella , harlequin raspbora, pencil fish, neon tetra(orange glow stripe).
they laid the eggs in the wood nook where the farlowella sleeps.
thanks , Georgie

a breeding mop, is literally what is states, a mop made up of cotton strands or similar look at http://search.babylon.com/imageres.php?iu=http://www.aquarticles.com/images/Leong%20misc/mop08.jpg&ir=http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/breeding/Leong_Spawning_Mop.html&ig=http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRmCZJhyntcfniKFwPQWj_bBp_RYGKIV6EKB2848MEg3-dp94d1dV0visQ&h=225&w=300&q=breeding mop&babsrc=browsersearch

now what fish do is lay their eggs on this mop. Once you have eggs you can move into a fry saver with an airstone. then the eggs do not get eaten. cheers jk

:dk:hope someone can tell me if this is gonna work, as i had to remove the eggs ,otherwise they'd be gone by morning. So i put a thin layer of foam in the fry box , sucked some eggs with the turkey baster ,put them on the foam and added an airstone. this is all i could do at the moment . :dk:
Has anyone tried it this way before ?
thanks , Georgie

well this was a joke to begin with ... i guess i dont have the skills to breed anything...so i gave up. they laid more eggs on the wood , i put them in the fry container w/ airstone and it fl ipped over a few times ,cover fell off and the fish got a nice free meal:wb:

BB, i did see the mop from the article you posted but i was in a hurry to move them and no wool in the house, i dont knit, but no sense in making one anyway as the stupid fry box flips around like a carnival ride. wonder if an elastic band around it would be ok? Or perhaps tether it somehow:dk:
Thanks for your suggestion anyway. MAY try again some other time.

When you say Rainbow fish do you mean Herotilapia multispinosa the "Rainbow cichlid"?

Thanks, when you said they were defending thier eggs it made me think of cichlids :D

The spawning mops can be picked up quite cheaply on certain auction sites if you do not fancy making your own.

thanks, Jimmy, for now i wave the white flag , but perhaps in the future i may try again, gotta admit it is tempting when i see the eggs and they really are very diligent about protecting them, too bad they always lay them on the farlowellas favorite resting place :dk: just feel bad and want to help them . Good to know i can buy a mop cuz as i do some crafts, i have never worked with wool, stupid excuse:whistle: so thanks for the heads up .
