Hi guys,

Just had the courier on to say my new Fluval Roma 240 tank and cabinet stand will be arriving tomorrow. I've got to say can't wait to get it set up and running.

So how long should i run it for before i can start adding livestock etc?

Any advice you guys wanna share?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section:

Run the tank for as long as you can With 4 weeks min.
Add 2 fish then slowly add fish each week first 2 then 4 and so on.
Do not over stock and do a 10% water change every week also feed every 2 or 3 days.

Congrats on the new set-up Mike. What fish do you want to keep in it? I agree with Bob about waiting at least 4 wks. The waiting part is no fun but adding fish too soon can result in disease or death. Best to take the time to properly cycle your tank and filter.

Its good to take it slow, but without any livestock or a "fishless" cycle, it won't matter how long you run the tank as no filter bacteria will establish. You'll get the same results adding fish after a day as you would if you ran an empty tank for 4 weeks before adding fish. You need to do something to seed the tank & establish the filters. See this article for more info:

EDIT: For clarification. You don't necessarily need to wait 4 weeks before addng fish, but you should wait 4 weeks before fully stocking the tank. Any stocking should be done, as Mac stated, slowly and in intervals of a few fish. The biggest mistake is to add all the fish at once or to add a few, keep them successfully for a week or so and think that you can fully stock your tank at that time.
