I bought a root from the lfs that seem very common in the stores around me and soaked it for week before putting it in my tank. The guy at the store said that if it doesn't sink to just put a rock on it and it will sink after a few days.

Well I've had a rock on it for almost another week but have yet to test if it floats or sinks, but now I see that white "fuzz" is coming out of it. Should I be concerned?

hello,

I usually find white fuzz on wood, if it has not been dried out properly. I would remove and let dry for another 4 weeks. Then soak in water for 3weeks before adding to the tank. This is just my view though or return it to the LFS and get another piece. If you get this new piece then again I would let dry for a further 4 weeks and then again soaked for 3weeks in a seperate tank. cheers jk

I have only plecos in the tank.

I removed the root and put it back to soak. I don't want to take any chances. This time I think I'll wait until it sinks, which I hope to mean it is thoroughly water-soaked and nothing else will seep out.

The white fuzz is often a result of sap remaining in the wood. It is quite common & not harmful. It can last quite a long time and additional soaking won't do much to alleviate the poblem quickly. Boiling the wood helps.
