I bought 2 fish from a local fish shop as royal whiptails a while ago and while doing some internet research have come to the conclusion that shops sell a few species as royal whiptail.
I have attached a photo of the male so hopefully some one can give me proper name for these lovely fish.

Hi all,
Looks like it might be Hemiloricaria lanceolata, but that is purely a guess you would need to find somebody who knows what they are looking at.

99% sure it is Hemiloricaria lanceolata, This is a fantastic fish quite easy to spawn well it must be it was one of the first I had any luck with. males develop the characteristic "beard" lay the eggs in a tube male tends to then feeding is as with most whips a pain they seem to want to have food very close to were they are.
A very interesting fish and one that is cheap to buy.
