Sand substrate for catfish breeding

Hi

is it safe to use sand as a substrate for bristlenose common, abn and peps?

will the sand stuck on the fry gills???

Has anyone use it?

I have my peps on sand, but haven't bred em as yet , so can't answer that one..But I would think it would be ok...

Just be aware that sand is a great breeding ground for all sorts of Bacteria

Hello,

have used silica sands for a long time now. The Ls love to dig in it and as long as you keep up the gravel vac and water changes you should be fine. cheers jk

Mine is a river sand, it has small bits of gravel in it...The peps don't have any gill problems with it...

I use play sand from B&Q, for over 3 years now, never had a problem, use MTS to keep the sand moving and aerated.

I use sand and some gravel, very shallow, in all my breeding tanks. fry never have a problem
