while cleaning out one of my tanks, i found a tiny baby Sewellia lineolata, it was living in the bottom of the external filter, so god only knows how many got flushed when i poured the water down the loo:wb:
I have missed all of the courting, mating and spawning, never even thought mine were big enough to breed yet, but i guess i was wrong.
Does anyone know how they spawn? i'll move them to their own tank soon as the young wont survive long in a tank with apisto's, so want to get the set up right for their method of spawning.

brilliant news. they dont breed easily (or maybe they do but the young are usually lost!)
i doubt if you threw many away as they tend to stick to the bottom of containers, well lets hope so. I suspect the fertilised egg was sucked into filter by mistake but that saved it from being eaten. how well did you clean the external - could there be any more trapped in the filter media?

As for how they breed - it seems this depends on the actual type of hillstream loach, and there are many types. some hang their tail over a rock, into the gravel, dig hole in gravel on leeward side, and lay eggs in hole and then male will fertilise and cover up. some are suspected of embracing each other in the water flow so he can fertilse as she drops them then the eggs scatter. but only witnessed by a few people.
many, just find very tiny young in the filter or in the gravel.

if you can take other fish out and leave just the loaches in there, then put fine fry food in every day as you may have young hiding in the gravel, that I think will increase the chances.

well done anyway! do you know how many males to females you have?
