i have been breeding these and many other b/n plecs etc for over ten years... i can remember when peppermint b/n first showed up and were $90 each at your local fishop for 2.5cm fry....
if your any sort of professional at breeding b/n you will know exactly what ph to spawn your peppermints at to get over 80% females and vice versa to get 80% or more males...
in the early days shops wanted more males with bristles as they were more appealing to sell to the person wanting them for display... so i did this...
later people wanted more females to breed with... so i did this....
i can pretty much spawn any male peppermint with any female peppermint at will and to be honest i dont think there is anything i dont know about b/n...
male peppermints can hold back their bristles in the presence of larger more dominant males... to be more precise dominant male releases hormones into the water that stunt the growth of other males... depending on how strong the other male is - is to whether or not it can overcome these hormones and fully develop in the presence of the dominant male....
i have grown up numerous batches of fry to adults to pick further breeding stock from and have been amazed several times picking out what i thought to be 9-10cm females and have them develop a full head of bristles...
i have had pepps spawn at 7 and 8cm... (15 eggs - i remember this one well) as the male barely had a bristle on its head....
back to nose / lip bristles.... females can have none 2,4,6 lip bristles out front... i have preferred to breed with females with no lip bristles and pretty much have bred the lip bristles out of the females... biggest reason for doing this was too many fraudulent people trying to sell males as females....
as stated in the original thread best method is to rub top of nose - squishy nose = male.... regardless of how many lip bristles are present...
the squishy nose starts to appear from about 6cm in pepps but you will need to be very good at this to get it right at this size....
i apoligise for posting in your for sale thread - but you need to take some responsibility and consideration into the way your for sale post was worded...
if it was worded differently with more correct sizings and definitive sex i would never have posted in your for sale thread...
if you are truly a man of your word and your fish are as good as you claim you and i both know you will have no trouble selling them easily....
