6cm is still abit small. The dots are fine, another sign of young fish.

Males show longer odontodes on the pectoral fins, also noticeably more hair on the body all the way to the caudal peduncle. Wider head shape and longer evertible odontodes. All typical features of a male Hypancistrus.
Mature females also show odontodes on the pectoral fins but to a much lesser extend. Overall absence of body hair and shorter evertible odontodes. Well conditioned females also exhibit a 'torpedo' shape body. Vent views also show the typical U shape as compare to the V shape of the male.
Your fish are about a year away from showing sign of maturity. Post some pictures then.
