Sick Weather Loach

My weather loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) is ill. I noticed something was not right about a week but stupidly didn't act on it. Yesterday just before a water change I saw that something was definitely wrong. I took him out and put him in a 2/3 full 70 litre tank, temp at 27 degrees and 1000lph internal filter.

The original tank water pre water change was it's usual: Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 25mgl, pH 6.5, low gH and kH.

His left gill operculum is very enlarged, the entire area protruding from his head. There are several cloudy coloured lump around his face, with some cloudy patches extending along his head. The right hand side of his head is significantly darker in colour than the left. There is a skin tag/lump along his body, potentially a fish louse but couldn't be certain. Behaviour is lethargic with occasional bursts of movement. Breathing is erratic, occasional heavy panting, occasional air gulping, sometimes no gill movement.

Note cloudy lumps and patches.

Note enlarged and protruding gill operculum/cover.

From what I've read, my books indicate a slime disease and recommend formalin and salt baths. I will try to confirm whether the skin tag/lump is a louse. Any help or guidance is appreciated.

Hey Matt,

Sorry for that, my initial though was gill fluke disease, but also unsure as well. They also recommend a salt bath and 30-50% water change. Hope it works well and other members can help your loach. cheers jk

Hey there-from what I have looked at so far slime cost could one of the problems and big water changes seem to be the most popular way to sort thisout. Hope he makes it though, weather loach are amazing creatures.

How long have you had him and whats been added to the tank recently?
He was one of the very first fish I bought, so about 7 years. What's been added fish-wise? Nothing, for about 10 months. I added a couple of pieces of old wood at about the same time I noticed something was up (but didn't act), but these pieces (small <30cm) have been with me for years and have been dry for a couple of months.

I've added salt and Interpet No5 at the recommended doses. Temperature is set at 25 degrees, so probably a little lower (I don't trust my thermometers). He's still eating, definitely a little blood worm (target fed with syringe) and potentially some algae wafer and brineshrimp pellets.

I'll do 20 litre water changes every other day and replace levels of salt and meds. Anything else I can do?

Well this fish has met his maker, although not how I thought. I found him behind the aquarium are dried up. He must have escaped between the corner gap on the condensation tray. Even if he hadn't done this I think he was terminal anyway. His left gill had started to enlarge and the white lumps on his face had coalesced.

Quite peeved as he was one of the first fish I bought and had him for 7/8 years. But at least I/we know now not to keep them at higher temperatures and to have a tight fitting cover.

Sorry to hear that mate, as fish get Older they become more suspectable to disease and illness. My pandas are over 6 years old now, they look older too.
