so this was my first tank... now the bn lives in it with some dither fish. I will soon be given a 30g tank to re-home him . I plan to paint the 30g back black , I plan to use the same gravel . However , I need some advice on what to ditch and what he will need more of, he mostly hangs behind the rena heater, so i want a scape that will make him happier. Any advice would be great. I'm sure i will keep the wood also , but othewise a blank slate .
thanks,
georgie

ok i would place some slate over the top of the caves, gives them security from above. I would also add sand as a substrate, but that is just my view. otherwise great. cheers jk

thanks BB, I see your point covering the caves, as i have done in the 54g

and do you mean sand only or mix with this gravel ? I never used sand and tend to like the look of this natural gravel, but which will make the bn happy ? I prefer to keep this , unless he will be terribly unhappy...gonna put some slate over the caves now, thanks for your ideas. :hi:

Yeah I am a gravel gal. I don't like sand.
I would tend to clump the rocks in just a couple of areas, leaving room for you to get a gravel vac in and do a good clean down deep every month or so.
Overhangs on caves are good but not so much so that you interfere with the current flow going past the opening of the cave.
Otherwise the poor pleco is going to wear his fins out paddling to get enough oxygen flow over the eggs.
